Black Path (Summer'76)

Down the black path and
Down the cinder track
Cool days of glass lie beneath
Corridors of allotment trenches
Messages in bottles and
Mixed signals

Not enough impenetrable forts
Not enough un-scaled towers
Too quick the summer
Too little time
Unbroken days of heat
Unprincipled games

We make up rules to live by
We take up challenges
Dares and deeds
Dares doubled and played out
Down the black path and
Down the cinder track

Allotment heaven entrenched
Allotted roles entangled
Your western fantasy
Your D-Day re-enactment
My secret missions
My fifteen minutes to save the world

We played in trenches
We stalked the enemy
I watched the films
I read the poetry

Down the black path and
Down the cinder track.
